Box Score CEDAR CITY, Utah - Juniors Michele Duncan and Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) combined for a two-it shutout as Dixie State defeated Southern Utah, 3-0, at Kathryn Berg Field on Thursday afternoon. The victory, the Red Storm's 17th consecutive, improved the squad to 40-8 on the year.
Duncan (13-1) allowed just two hits while tossing four scoreless innings for the Red Storm before being relieved by Feickert who earned her first save of the season by pitching the final three scoreless innings. It was the thirteenth shutout of the season for the DSU staff, lowering the team ERA to 2.12.
Freshman pitcher Jordan Theurer (5-7) got the start for SUU and was on the cusp of making her way through the first three innings without giving up a run before a sun ball that allowed Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) a two-out triple as she extended her hitting streak to 24-games. A fielding error on the next play allowed her to reach home to put the Red Storm in front, 1-0.Junior Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) extended the Dixie State advantage with a solo home run in the fourth inning and freshman Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) rounded out the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single to left that scored Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) from second base and set the final count at 3-0.
The only two hits the DSU staff allowed was a Kylee Wolf double in the third and Meagan Neilson came up with a base hit in the second and the team drew a total of six walks, but none of the runners reached home as the Thunderbirds were held scoreless for the first time in more than three weeks.
Seven different players had hits for DSU, including Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) who extended her reaching base streak to 25-games.
The Red Storm travel to the San Francisco Bay Area April 26 and 27 for a pair of games with Academy of Art and Dominican.
