ST. GEORGE, UT -- A pair of shutout pitching performances guided the Dixie State University softball team to its 14th consecutive win by defeating Brigham Young University Hawaii 10-0 in five innings and 2-0 in the night cap this afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.

The Red Storm improved to 37-8 overall and 21-5 in the Pacific West Athletic Conference.

In the opener, Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) and Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed just four hits as the No. 3 ranked offense in the NCAA stroked 14 hits in the run-rule victory.

DSU capitalized on two Seasider (10-16/6-14 PWC) errors in the first inning by scoring five runs, three of which were unearned. Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) reached in the bottom of the first on an error on the shortstop. Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) followed with a single through the left side of the infield and then stole second base. Designated player Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) drew a walk to load the bases. BYUH starting pitcher Gabby Hawkins followed by inducing a pop fly to record the first out of the inning. 

DSU would score the first run of the game on Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School)'s RBI single to right field. Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School) drew an RBI bases loaded walk and Brooke Budge (Springville, UT/Springville High School) followed with an RBI single to right field. With two outs, Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) plated the final two runs of the inning with an RBI single through the right side to give DSU a 5-0 lead.

In the second inning, Chavez led the inning off with a solo-home run to left field, her team leading 9th of the season. After a walk and a pair of singles by Paulson and Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School), an RBI groundout by Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) gave DSU a 7-0 lead through two innings.

The final DSU runs scored in the third inning when Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) reached on a bunt single. After a successful sacrifice bunt from Budge, Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) hit and RBI single to left field. Sherwin followed with a towering two run home run to centerfield to give DSU a 10-0 lead.

The Seasiders only real threat of the game came when Snow entered in the top of the fourth and hit the first batter she faced and allowed a double to left center. She followed by striking out the four batters and ending the game on a strike out to record five in just two innings of work. Feickert improved to 18-6 and lowered her ERA to 1.79.

Chavez, Sherwin, Paulson, Gelter and Budge each had two hits.

In the second game, Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) threw a complete game one-hitter, striking out seven batters, while needing just 84 pitches to improve to 11-1 and lowering her ERA to 1.40. 

DSU was held scoreless for the first three frames, but in the fourth inning with two outs, Budge executed a perfect bunt for a single to the first baseman. She stole second on the next pitch and Hartman followed with an RBI triple to left center and score the game winner.

The Red Storm added an insurance in the fifth inning, Chavez singled to right field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Paulson followed with an RBI double to left center to give DSU a 2-0 lead.

Chavez added two hits to extend her hitting streak to 21-games. Hartman also added two hits.

Tomorrow will be the final regular season home games for the Red Storm, prior to the first game they will honor the two senior's Snow and Budge. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m..
