Hine Leads Red Storm to Split with Sonoma State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) had three hits and three RBI to lead the Dixie State softball team to a  3-1 win in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader against Sonoma State on Monday afternoon. The Red Storm dropped the second game 7-6.

Hine picked up her first RBI in the third inning after the Red Storm (23-8) trailing 1-0. Brooke Budge (Springville, UT/Springville High School) was hit by a pitch and Hine doubled to right center field scoring Gelter.

DSU added two more runs in the fifth inning after Hartman singled to third base and Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) doubled to left field and Hine followed with a 2RBI single to center to give DSU a 3-1 lead.

Starting pitcher Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) pitched another complete game, allowing just one run on seven hits, while striking out two SeaWolf (17-11) batters.

Chavez  also finished with two hits.

In the second game, DSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four hits.  Hine continued to dominate as she scored a laser to left field for her fourth RBI of the day to give DSU a 1-0 lead.  Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) followed with a RBI double to left field and Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) plated the final two runs with a 2RBI double to center field.

But, starter Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) recorded the first out of the inning and then walked two batters and hit the third batter before giving up a 2RBI double that cut the Storm lead to 4-2.

Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) relieved Snow and except for an overthrow that cost the Red Storm a run, pitched them out of the early jam.

Sonoma State scored the equalizer in the second inning to tie the game at four, but DSU responded with a run in the top of the third to steal back the lead.

The game was plagued with errors as the two teams combined for nine errors, thirteen runs, and 19 hits.

After leading 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, head coach Randy Simkins turned to Feickert to close things out, but the Seawolves capitalized on a DSU error and added two runs to steal the victory from the Red Storm.

DSU returns home after the successful 10-game road trip where they finished with an 8-2 record. DSU hosts Hawaii Hilo on Saturday and Sunday at Karl Brooks Field in a pivotal Pacific West Conference series.
