DSU Finishes with Series Sweep of Holy Names

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Dixie State softball team finished with a doubleheader sweep today of Holy Names, 14-0 in five innings and 11-3 in six innings.

With the victories the Red Storm move into a first place tie with California Baptist and improve to 22-7 overall and 11-5 in PWC.

In the opening game today, the Red Storm scored 14 runs on 18 hits to cruise to an easy victory. DSU scored in each of the five innings of the game, including a five spot in third and fifth innings.

Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) and Brooke Budge (Springville, UT/Springville High School) each had three hits and four RBI. Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) also added three hits.

Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) pitched three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four Hawk (8-25/4-12 PWC) hitters to improve to 10-5 overall. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) finished the last two innings in relief, she also added two hits of her own at the plate.

After surrendering a first inning run in the second game to Holy Names, the Storm responded with an equalizer in the second when Hartman hit an RBI single and took the lead on a RBI single from Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) in the third.

The Hawks pressed the Storm in the fourth and capitalized on a DSU error and scored two runs to take a 3-2 lead.

DSU responded in the fifth inning with three runs, the first scored on an RBI single from Freeland and the other two scored on two HNU errors.

In the sixth inning the Storm scored six more runs to extend their lead to eight runs. In the inning, RBI singles from Beardshear, Freeland, and Hartman and a 2RBI single to right center by Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School).

The 15 hits was enough offense for the DSU pitching staff. Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) started the game and was relieved by Beardshear after three innings of work. Beardshear needed just four pitches in the fifth and three in the third to retire the Hawks to pick up her second win of the season.

Dixie State concludes the 10-game road trip on Monday afternoon with a pair of games with West Region powerhouse Sonoma State.
