Sweep for the Red Storm over the Gators

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The No. 22 ranked Dixie State softball swept a non-conference doubleheader today over San Francisco State 4-2 in the opener and 4-1 in the nightcap.

The Red Storm (17-6) slugged 23 hits today but managed to score just eight runs on the day. DSU has been averaging 7.1 runs per game, dwell enough for 14th in the NCAA in runs scored.

"We swung the bat well today," said head coach Randy Simkins. "But we just couldn't get the timely hit like we have been all day."

The Gators (7-16) struck first in the opener, scoring a run in the bottom of the first off of DSU starter Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ).

In the third inning, a Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) doubled to left center and Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) followed with an infield single to shortstop. Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) singled to centerfield on a  1-1 pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

San Francisco State capitalized on a Red Storm error in the fourth inning and took a 2-1 lead.

DSU won the game in the sixth inning when three runners crossed the plate. Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off. Two batters latter, pinch hitter Rochelle Jenkins (Mira Loma, CA/Roosevelt High School) earned a walk during a quality 10-pitch at bat. A Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) single to right center field loaded the bases for the Red Storm in the inning.

Brooke Budge (Springville, UT/Springville High School) would end up getting the game winning hit when she doubled to center field scoring Sherwin and Jenkins. Hine would also single to left field, picking up the final run for DSU.

Feickert allowed just one earned run, walking just two while striking out four in seven innings of work. She improved to 7-4 on the season.

In the nightcap, starter Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) pitched her best game of the season. She allowed seven hits, just one run and walked two, while striking out two to pick up the complete game victory.

Despite scoring four runs, DSU had plenty of opportunities to score, as they would strand 11 runners in the game.  The Red Storm scored in four different innings to win 4-1.

"Mattie pitched well today, she worked fast and located the ball very well," continued Simkins.

The Red Storm will now play a pair of Pacific West Conference games tomorrow at Notre Dame de Namur.
