Storm Open Desert Stinger with Barrage of Hits

Box Score LAS VEGAS -- The DIxie State University women's softball team used a barrage of hits, 13 in all to score eight runs in five innings to run-rule Colorado State Univesity Pueblo tonight in the opening round of the Desert Stinger Tournament at Majestic Park.

Junior infielder #Nicole Chavez provided the first blow for the Red Storm, a 2-run home run to left center to give Dixie State (2-1) a 2-0 lead. Two batters latter, freshman sensation Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) hit a two-run double to left field to cap off the four run third inning for DIxie State.

In the circle, Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) picked up her first win and shutout of the season by striking out four CSUP (0-2) battersd in a complete game.

The Storm added three more runs in the fourth inning on a Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) RBI single and a Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) 2 RBI double to right field, giving DSU a 7-0 lead.

Dixie State scored the final run of the game on a passed ball in the top of the fifth inning.

"We played a complete game tonight," said head coach Randy Simkins. "We really hit the ball well and Duncan pitched it great."

All the DSU starters reached base via the hit with Reiter leading the way with three, Chavez and Sherwin each added two.

The Red Storm continue the Desert Stinger tomorrow at 3 pm against University of Colorado Colorado Springs and 8 pm against CSU Dominguez Hills.
