SB Weekly Preview: Crucial Weekend as Red Storm Travel to California Baptist and Azusa Pacific

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State softball team makes its first PacWest road trip this weekend to Southern California. The Red Strom has doubleheaders with No. 3 California Baptist on Saturday at 12 p.m. (Pacific) and a Monday doubleheader with Azusa Pacific at 2 p.m. (Pacific). Live stats of each game will be available via DixieAtheltics.com, as provided by the host institutions.
 
NFCA Rankings
This weeks poll had the Red Storm maintain its spot at No. 22 and fellow PWC member California Baptist catapulted into the ranking at No. 9 last week and jumped to No. 3 in this week.
 
PacWest Breakdown
Not having to make the long journey to the islands this season, the difficult part of DSU's PacWest schedule is packed into the first three weeks. The Red Storm will have played all their games against Hawaii Pacific, Azusa Pacific, and California Baptist.


Dixie State (12-3, 3-1 PWC)
An opening PacWest weekend of 3-1 is sufficient, unless of course your head coach Randy Simkins. The Storm split with Azusa Pacific, but rebounded nicely to take two games from rock of Hawaii Pacific.
 
Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) and Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) each continued their great start to 2014. Reiter was 5-8 with a home run and seven RBI. Gelter was only three for nine, but did hit a home run and have three RBI.
 
Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) filled in nicely for Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) (hip flexor), as she picked up two quality wins. Batters continue to be perplexed by her pitching and are hitting just .191 against her.  Duncan (5-1, 1.54 ERA) is still questionable this weekend and if she cannot pitch will need to rely on Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) (3-1, 3.72 ERA) and Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) (0-0, 6.18 ERA) to assist Feickert.

DSU continues to hit the ball well by hitting over .383 as a team and have six players hitting over .400. Reiter leads the team in average (.457) and RBI (18), and shares the home run race (3) with Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) (.439) and Gelter (.425).
 
Simkins Era and Karl Brooks Field
The Storm are 122-39 (.760) in the D2 era at Karl Brooks Field, with their best season coming in 2011 when they finished 19-1. Coach Randy Simkins current record in six seasons is 211-63 (.768).

California Baptist (17-4, 8-2 PWC)
The Lancers have had winning streaks of four, five and six games and have earned the respect in the West Region that they deserve. Krista Mann leads CBU in hitting with a .433 average and adds six home runs and 22 RBI. August Marshean leads the team with seven home runs, bats .431 and has 22 RBI as well. The squad is hitting .332 as a team and has drawn 82 walks on the season.
 
CBU has two pitchers, Belinda Renne (11-2, 2.45 ERA) and Kayla Hatch (6-2, 4.36 ERA), not unbeatable numbers but have show that they can get the job done.

Azusa Pacific (14-5, 5-3 PWC)
The two teams were originally scheduled to meet Feb. 28, but potential weather in Southern California forced the schools to change the games to Monday.
 
The Cougars have faired well against ranked opponents, splitting the last two game series with Dixie State and California Baptist. In both victories, Carly Xepoleas (6-0, 1.40 ERA) remained unhittable by holding the Red Storm to no runs and the Lancers to two. Nicki Sprague who is hitting .556 on the season, continues to slay opposing pitchers.  Carrie Webber, who is in her sixth year and a record of 164-109, coaches the Cougars.
