ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Hawaii Pacific University 10-6 and 10-2 on Sunday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.

The Red Storm (12-3/3-1 PWC) scored 20 runs and pounded out 18 hits in the doubleheader to cruise to the sweep of the SeaWarriors (1-9/1-9 PWC).

In the opener, after a Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) single to right center, Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) RBI double off the center field wall scored Sherwin from first base to give DSU a 1-0 lead.

Three consecutive walks and a hit by pitch which included RBI for Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) and Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain), gave the Storm a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning Dixie State added six more runs, four that came in one swing off the bat of Reiter. The 1-2 fastball she deposited overall the right field wall was her first grand slam at DSU and her third home run of the season.

Brooke Budge (Springville, UT/Springville High School) added a two RBI double to the right centerfield gap that plated the final two runs of the inning and give DSU a 9-0 lead.

Hartman added another DSU run in the 4th, an RBI single to left field.

HPU added three runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to narrow the DSU gap. Starting pitcher Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) surrendered four runs, four hits, registered five strikeouts, while walking five in five and two thirds innings of work. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) pitched in relief, securing the Red Strom victory.

In the second game the Red Storm added 10 runs on 10 hits and forced the five-inning run-rule victory over the SeaWarriors.

The star of the game was Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) who had a solo home run in the second inning and a two RBI double to left center in the DSU five run fourth inning.

Freeland led DSU with three hits, Gelter and Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) each had two to give DSU starter Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) all the help that she needed in the circle.  Snow improved to 3-1 on the season, allowing five hits, two runs, two walks, and struck out two.
