Storm Slug Way to Doubleheader Sweep of Western New Mexico

24 hits for DSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAINT GEORGE, Utah – The No. 23 ranked Dixie State University softball team slugged their way to a pair of victories over Western New Mexico University, 10-2 and 9-0, both games ended by the run-rule in five innings today at Karl Brooks Field.
 
The Red Storm (7-2) pounded out 16 hits in the opener and added eight more in the nightcap to run away from the anemic Mustang (1-6) offense.
 
The staff ace Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) pitched a complete game in the first game, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out and walking three each to improve to 4-1 on the season.
 
DSU gave Duncan plenty of support and it started in the first inning when the potent offense erupted for seven runs on seven hits, all with two outs.
 
In the DSU fourth, Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) scored on a Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) double after reaching on her own double to lead off the inning. Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) following with an RBI single to right to extend the Storm lead to 9-2. They added another run in the fifth to close the game out early.
 
Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) had four hits and Gelter added three, while four players finished with two RBI each.
 
In the second game, head coach Randy Simkins sent veteran Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) to the circle and she pitched a gem and earned her first shutout of the season, improving to 2-0.
 
The Red Storm offense added eight more hits, but also took advantage of four Mustang errors. Reiter and Gelter each had two hits and Hine added a hit and two RBI.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning Sherwin pounded the final nail with a two run home run to centerfield to give DSU a 9-0 lead.
 
The Red Storm and the Mustangs are back in action tomorrow morning at 11 am at Karl Brooks Field.
