Storm win one for the seniors

Dixie State closes out season with 4-1 over FPU

ST. GEORGE – Things finally came together for the Red Storm and the five member of the senior class of 2014 Saturday at Hansen Stadium. The defense played strong, the goalkeeping was solid and the ball hit the back of the net multiple times.

Behind a pair of goal from senior David Stirland (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane), Dixie State defeated Fresno Pacific 4-1 on Senior Day.

The win was the first at home for DSU and only the second if the year in 16 matches. Dixie State closed out a 2-12-2 campaign with its most complete performance of the year.

"I'm extremely happy for the guys today," DSU head coach Danny Ortiz said. "Especially the seniors who all played a role in the win today."

7106Stirland's goals came in the 81st and 85th minutes respectively off assists from Santiago Alejandro (Oakley, CA/Alhambra). The two goals matched the Hurricane native's career total entering Saturday's match.

A Fresno Pacific (9-6-1/7-4-1) own goal put Dixie State up 1-0 midway through the first half.

Alejandro put the Storm up 2-0 by heading in a shot following a throw in by Bryan Baugh (Henderson, NV/Green Valley).

FPU benefitted from a rare DSU defensive miscue in the 75th minute, leading to an own goal.

Dixie State held a potent Sunbird offense to five shots while firing 15 of their own.

"To only give up five shots to a team like Fresno speaks volumes about the commitment of the whole team," Ortiz added. "They finished the season with the same strong effort they gave every game this season."

Senior goalkeeper Spencer Anderson (Glendale, AZ/Mountain View) got the win after a flawless first half. Freshman tender Eddie Ortiz (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron) played the second half and made one save.
