ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Dixie State women's basketball team hosts three teams to the Burns Arena to start the 2014-15 season.
The Red Storm face Alaska Fairbanks on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., Chico State at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21 and Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2:30 p.m. Alaska Fairbanks and CSU San Marcos will play Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Burns Arena, and Alaska Fairbanks and Chico will face off on Saturday at 12 p.m.
STORM STORYLINES
Dixie State is entering the 2014-15 season after a 14-14 campaign in 2013-14
The Red Storm played three exhibition games, including one against Division I opponent, UNLV in Las Vegas. DSU beat Redlands 80-62.
Top returners for the Red Storm include Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day), the top returning scorer at 13.5 points per game last season, including 3.3 assists. Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) brings back 8.7 points and a tied for a team-leading 9.2 rebounds per game with Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork).
Dixie State averaged 75.1 points per game last year and shot 38.5 percent as a team.
Alaska Fairbanks is off to a 2-0 start, San Marcos is 1-2 before heading into the Thanksgiving Classic and Chico State is 1-0.
Jenny Thigpin takes the helm as interim head coach. Thigpin joined the DSU women's basketball staff in 2013 as an assistant after spending two seasons at Pacific West Conference member Fresno Pacific and after four years coaching at Buchanan High School in Clovis. She brings the Red Storm a wealth of experience both as a coach and a player.
Returning to the lineup includes senior guards Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) and Taylor Maynes (Salome, AZ/Salome) (Salome, AZ/Salome), junior forward Brianna Jessop (Hyrum, UT/Mountain Crest) (Hyrum, UT/Mountain Crest) and senior center Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork), along with junior center Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) and freshman center Nishiki Washington (Nagasaki, Japan/Miura) (Nagasaki, Japan/Miura).
