FRESNO, Calif. – Needing a win to help put it in a position for a postseason berth, the Dixie State women's volleyball team secured a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-14) sweep over Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
"We played very well," head coach
Robyn Felder said. "They were calm and focused. Calm and focused was our mantra tonight."
The Red Storm (20-8, 17-3) hit .259 for the match, with seven kills apiece from
Lindsey Jones (Saint George, UT/Desert Hills),
Maddie Rex (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) and
Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany). Fresno Pacific (20-9, 14-6) had 29 errors for a negative hitting percentage on a night where DSU dominated.
Dixie State will now await its name being called at the NCAA selection show on Sunday at 8 p.m. MT. The Storm ranked No. 8 in the last regional rankings, likely assuring a spot in the postseason with a win today.
In set one Dixie State got rolling early and often. The Red Storm spouted off a steady run to build a double-digit lead. DSU cruised in the first set to a 25-12 victory.
Jones and Rex were big at the net. Jones had four kills and a block while Rex had three and another block. Throughout the match,
Nicole Koehler (Sandy, UT/Alta) came up huge at the net with five total blocks.
Set No. 2 saw the Sunbirds make more of an effort, holding the Red Storm to a 13-11 advantage midway through. Fresno Pacific went up in the set 14-13 but then Dixie State rattled off an 11-3 run to make it 24-17. FPU tried to make a late run but a service error gave DSU the 25
th point and a 25-19 win.
Another late run helped the Red Storm pick up the sweep. Dixie State led 14-11 and a 9-1 stretch doomed the Sunbirds. The Red Storm was able to get another point and win the third set 25-14.
With the sweep, Dixie State likely will advance with a spot in the NCAA West Regional.
