CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first exhibition game in prep for the 2014-15 season, the Dixie State women's basketball team lost 65-52 to Claremont McKenna College Friday evening.
Both teams started slow out of the gates. The Red Storm went down 27-16 at one point but rallied before halftime to make it 27-23 at the half.
In the second half, the Athenas started out on a 12-0 run over the first six minutes. DSU put together a quick 5-0 spurt but still trailed by double-digits with under seven minutes to play.
The Storm drilled a deep trey with under five minutes but still trailed 52-39 with 4:30 to go.
Dixie State wasn't giving up just yet.
DSU's
Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:28 to cut the lead to 10 at 52-42. She was fouled on the play and sank the freebie for a 4-point play, making it a single-digit deficit.
Chermayne Moore (Pinole, CA/Hercules) banked in a triple at the two-minute mark to make it 56-48. A turnover on the other end gave the ball right back to the Red Storm with 1:50 left to go.
The Athenas took advantage at the free throw line however, and closed out the game with enough makes from the charity stripe to hand the Storm a 65-52 loss.
Dixie State will head up the road to Redlands, Calif. to play the University of Redlands in another exhibition game Saturday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT.
