RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In a rematch of last week's win for Dixie State in St. George, this time the women's volleyball came up short to Cal Baptist 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 22-25, 24-26) on Thursday night.
Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany) posted 15 kills to lead the Red Storm (15-7, 12-2), dropping just the second match of the season in conference play. Weiland also had five digs and four block assists. DSU hit .207 for the match while Cal Baptist (14-9, 10-5) hit .228 to edge the Red Storm.
"It's always disappointing to lose on the road but the girls played hard today," head coach
Robyn Felder said. "We couldn't captitalize on some key plays and never really had control. We will learn from this loss and get better."
In set one, Dixie State led it for most of the way. The Red Storm maintained the lead early and often, winning it 25-18.
DSU got down in the second set but went on a run to retake the lead 14-12. Later on, the Lancers went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 18-16. Cal Baptist stayed in front and went on to win 25-22 to tie the match at 1-1.
Cal Baptist continued to ride the momentum in the third set, building up an 18-11 lead. Dixie State made a late push but couldn't claw back, falling 25-22 again. The Lancers went ahead in the match 2-1.
Dixie State was determined to get back in it in the fourth set. DSU went down early but put together a 4-0 clip to tie it up at 11-11. The Red Storm came back to lead 17-15 but the Lancers answered to go ahead 20-18.
The Storm cut the lead down to one but a big block from the Lancers made it match point at 24-22. DSU came back to tie it at 24-24 but CBU got back-to-back scores to finish off the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth set.
Dixie State travels to Azusa Pacific for a match on Saturday at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT.
