Hardrockers come knocking Saturday at Hansen: Dixie State (1-7, 0-3 GNAC), fresh off its first victory of the year, stays at home for a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup with South Dakota Mines (1-7, 0-4 GNAC) on Saturday, Nov. 1. The game will kickoff at 6:05 p.m. MT. Metz named GNAC Defensive Player of the Week: Robert Metz (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro), Dixie Stat had 15 tackles as the Red Storm limited Menlo to 257 yards in a 28-6 home win. Metz had 11 solo tackles and four assists, including one that resulted in a loss.
Notes from Homecoming 2014: Robert Metz (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro) continued his torrent tackle streak recording double-digit stops for the third straight game… Nate Stephens (Redding, CA/Shasta) entered the game with one TD reception, he left Hansen Stadium with four. Grabs from 19, 1 and 9 yards for scores were included in his eight catch, 96-yar day … Ben Longshore (Santa Clarita, CA/Canyon) has thrown for three TDs in each of the last two games … With a 150-127 rushing yards win, DSU outgained their opponent on the ground for only the second time this season (Week 1 at CMU, 301-131)
Storm vs. Mines: Saturday's matchup will be the first meeting with South Dakota Mines on the gridiron in the Storm's NCAA and Great Northwest Athletic Conference tenure.Â
A look at the Hardrockers: South Dakota Mines is 1-7 on the season and 0-4 in GNAC play. The Hardrockers lost at home last week 52-30 to Azusa Pacific. Despite having the best total offense in the GNAC averaging 462.8 yards per game, Mines only puts up 29.2 PPG. Junior quarterback Trent McKinney leads the conference in total offense (577 rush/2,040 pass) with 327.1 yards per contest. He is the GNAC's top ranked passer and fourth-best rusher. Marcus Sanchez and Daniel Ziegler ranks in the top 10 in reception yards. Wins have come few and far between because the Hardrockers allow near 50 points per game to their opponents and 548.0 yards against. Defensively, Jay Lata and Jake Hepp are seventh and eighth, respectively, in total tackles.
GNAC review: Terrell Watson rushed for 206 yards and set a GNAC career record for touchdowns and Chad Jeffries had 306 yards of total offense as the Cougars ran their win streak to six with a 22-point road win at South Dakota Mines, 52-30. The Cougars won despite surrendering 606 including a GNAC-record 535 by Mines quarterback Trent McKinney who completed 36 of 54 passes for 481 yards and ran for 54... Trailing 16-14 in the fourth quarter, the Wolves drove 94 yards in seven plays including the final 29 on a pass from quarterback Ryan Bergman to freshman wide receiver Paul Revis to go-ahead and then got an insurance score on a 54-yard Revis-Bergman hookup to beat Simon Fraser 27-16... Nick Ricciardulli rushed for 178 of the Lumberjacks' 284 yards and freshman QB Robert Webber completed 12 of 27 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns as the Lumberjacks, improved to 6-1 with an 18-point win over Central Washington, 38-20.
Brum's coaching ledger: Scott Brumfield is in his fifth year as head coach of the Storm. Brumfield has a 11-40 collegiate coaching record. Prior to being Dixie State's head coach, Brumfield was offensive coordinator at DSU. He was the head coach at his alma mater, Spanish Fork High School before moving to DSU.
