Men's soccer drops double OT match

Dixie State goes 1-8 away from Hansen this season

SAN DIEGO – Dixie State came up short in a match decided by one goal for seventh time this season in a 1-0 setback to Point Loma in double overtime Saturday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play.

"The team played well again today," DSU head coach Danny Ortiz said. "For the second game in a row, they gave all they had for 90-plus minutes."

The first half was played close between the two clubs. Dixie State (1-11-1, 1-8) had a 6-4 shot advantage and the opposing keepers each had one save in the opening 45 minutes.

Frank Mallek (Yuma, AZ/Kofa) took three shots in the second half with two saved by PLNU keeper Avrin Yakou. The final DSU shot in regulation came with 13 minutes on the clock, leaving the Storm defense to keep the match scoreless. The Sea Lions sent four shots toward the net, two that were saved by freshman keeper Eddie Ortiz (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron).

In the first overtime, Dixie State had a chance off a corner kick, but a hot from Bryan Baugh (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) was blocked away.

The Storm's last salvo came midway through the final 10-minute period. A great crossing pass put Jorge Echavarria (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista) in the box for a header, but Yakou hauled in a nice save.

PLNU's difference maker evolved off a corner kick from Daniel ten Bosch. He perfectly placed the ball from the corner on net and Nico Tagaloa headed in the game-winner to the far post.

The match saw a 14-14 shot total despite the Sea Lions (5-7-2, 5-3-10 dominating in corner kicks, 8-3.

Dixie State returns home on Thursday to play Dominican at 4:30 p.m.

"We have three games remaining, all at home," Ortiz said. "I have to find a way to get this group the W they deserve."
