Notes from Glendora: Saturday's game with Azusa Pacific was the eighth game against an AFCA ranked opponent – DSU is now 0-8 all-time against ranked teams… Ben Longshore (Santa Clarita, CA/Canyon) threw for three touchdowns – the first time a DSU quarterback has done that this season, first time since Griff Robles (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) also threw for three scores at APU on Nov. 9, 2013… Linebacker Robert Metz (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro) made 10 tackles against the Cougars – it's the second time this season he had double digit tackles (13 vs. APU at home)… Dixie State held APU running back Terrell Watson to 198 rushing – only the third time Watson has been held under 200 yards this year (at HSU, at DSU)… Eight different receivers caught a pass in the APU game – it is the second straight week the QBs have found eight different targets.
Storm vs. the Oaks: Saturday's matchup will be the first meeting with Menlo College on the gridiron in the Storm's NCAA tenure.
A look at the Oaks: Menlo College is 2-5 on the season after enduring a 70-2 loss at home last week to Division III No. 4 Wesley College. The Oaks enter Saturday's game averaging 322.6 yards of total offense per contest. Menlo opponents are averaging 485.2 yards of total offense, which was impacted by 665 yards posted by Wesley last week. Freshman quarterback Josh Neal has thrown for 200 yards over the last three weeks. Three running backs have accounted for most of the rushing offense for the season – Jake Fohn (304), Amjed Aboul-Hosn (217) and Kenneth Marley (198). Brandon Soohoo has 411 receiving yards (29 grabs) to lead the Oaks while Daniel Jones has made the most grabs with 31. Sophomore defensive back Gabe Deol leads the defense with 56 tackles.Â
GNAC review: Defensive back Isaiah Davis set up three of Central Washington's four scores, including the game-winning touchdown to lead the Wildcats to a four-point win over Western Oregon, 24-20. WOU's Paul Revis had nine receptions for 161 yards – his league-leading fourth 100-yard game of the season. Trailing 31-20 in the final minute of the first half, Simon Fraser scored 33 unanswered points to defeat South Dakota Mines 53-31. SD Mines couldn't slow down the Clan offense, which finished with 621 yards (240 rushing) and outgained Mines 357-85 in the second half. Humboldt State had a bye week after suffering its first loss two weeks ago at APU.
Brum's coaching ledger: Scott Brumfield is in his fifth year as head coach of the Storm. Brumfield has a 10-40 collegiate coaching record. Prior to being Dixie State's head coach, Brumfield was offensive coordinator at DSU. He was the head coach at his alma mater, Spanish Fork High School before moving to DSU.
