Last week in Storm soccer: DSU dropped its lone match last week, 2-1 to the Lancers of California Baptist at home to begin PacWest play. A pair of penalty kicks proved to be the deciding factor in CBU's victory. Dixie State outshot the Lancers 9-7, but only put three of those shots on goal. Darian McCloy (Herriman, UT/Herriman) scored her first goal of the year with an athletics high kick to beat the CBU goalkeeper top shelf. Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) made three saves for the Red Storm.
Nusink honored: Danica Nusink earned the victory in her first-career start against Cal State Dominguez Hills to earn the Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Week. She made five saves and allowed only one goal in the 2-1 victory. She kept the Toros scoreless for the final 50 minutes.
A look at the BYUH, Chaminade: BYU-Hawaii has won three of its last four matches after losing three in a row to begin the season. The Seasiders have turned the tide to begin Pacific West Conference play 2-0 with win at Holy Names (3-0) and Dominican (2-1). Junior forward McKenzie Evans leads BYUH with three goals. Chaminade won two of three matches via shutouts during their most recent road trip in California. After defeating Holy Names and Dominican, the Silverswords stumbled at Fresno Pacific, 2-0. With three goals, Twyla Hamasaki accounts for 75 percent of Chaminade's scoring offense. Â
Mason adds to her career lead: A goal at Cal State Dominguez Hills was Jen Mason's eight game-winner of her career. She is the Dixie State all-time Division II leader in game-winners. Her current cushion is two goals over former players Erin Beeston and Wendy Stratford. Kim Thurman is the next highest active player on the career list in a tie for seventh place with three game-winners.
Hawaii trip continues next week: After Saturday's league opener, the WSOC team will fly over to the islands of Hawaii for four matches over an eight-day span.
