VB: Red Storm Stay Undefeated in PacWest Play with Win Over Dominican (CA)

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- The Dixie State volleyball team needed five games to freeze out the Penguins of Dominican (CA) University 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-25, 15-6 tonight in the Conlan Center.

The Red Storm (6-3/3-0 PacWest) jumped out to an early lead in the first game, only to lose momentum and drop the game 22-25.

DSU battled back in the second and third game and looked to be in control. But, DUC (1-10/0-3 PacWest) had other ideas and socked it to the Storm in the fourth game 25-16 to force the decisive fifth game.

The Red Storm jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the final frame, Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany) had two kills and added a third after a Penguin timeout to give DSU a 5-0 lead.

A DSU service error and an attack error, allowed Dominican (CA) a glimmer of hope. But, DSU added five more points and lead 10-2 and that forced another Penguin timeout.

Makenzi Bird (Saint George, UT/Snow Canyon ) finally put pesky Penguins away and give the Red Storm their third straight PacWest win.

"It was a good win for us," said head coach Robyn Felder. "Four games in five days is grueling and so we really are counting on good defense and a deep bench to get us through it."

Leading the way offensively with 15 kills was Weiland. Maddie Rex (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) and Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul) each added 12 kills for a balanced Red Storm attack.

On the defensive side, Alex Anderson (Prescott, AZ/Prescott) led with 23 digs and Shelby Sorenson (Lehi, UT/Lehi) had 41 set assists. DSU added 12 team blocks.

The Red Storm conclude their Bay Area road trip, with a match tomorrow at Academy of Art in San Francisco at 8 p.m..
