Volleyball Splits at I.C Bhatka Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, NM -- The Dixie State volleyball team split a doubleheader at the 2013 I.C. Bhakta Volleyball Invitational, hosted by New Mexico Highlands University.

This morning the Red Storm (2-2) defeated the host school NHMU (4-2) in five games, 25-19, 25-17, 15-25, 23-25, 15-7.

DSU won the match, despite committing 14 service errors. Nicole Keohler led with 10 kills and Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul) added nine.

In the second match, the Red Strom dropped their match to Western New Mexico (5-1) 3-1,  20--25, 25-16, 20-25, 23-25.

After dropping the first set to the Mustangs, the Red Storm raced out to an 11-6 lead in the second set, only to watch the Lady Mustangs come back to eventually tie the set at 12 on a kill by Rich. A Pulu ace a few points later moved WNMU in front, 14-13. They would open a 15-13 lead on an attack error, but Dixie State came back with a 7-0 spurt to take a 20-15 lead. After Rich scored the next point for the Lady Mustangs on a kill, Dixie State closed on a 5-0 run to take the set, 25-16 and even the match at one.

DSU could not manage to recover, and dropped the third and fourth sets desipte leading 20-17 in the fourth. WNMU won their fifth match in a row.

"We just couldn't get a groove in our second match," said head coach Robyn Felder. "We will just work harder tomorrow to try and finish better."

Young added a match-high 15 kills and Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany) added 12 kills.

Dixie State concludes the tournament tomorrow with to matches against Western State University and Colorado Mesa University.
