Red Storm Softball tabbed as No. 2 Seed, Host of West Regional

SAINT GEORGE – Fresh off a Pacific West Conference Championship, the Dixie State softball team earned the No. 2 seed and the right to host one section of the this week's NCAA Division II West Regional  Championships, which runs May 10-12 at Karl Brooks Field.

The Red Storm (37-12) are making their fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and are hosting for the second time, the last coming in 2009. DSU will host PacWest Conference co-champion No. 7 Hawaii HIlo (39-17) at 3:30 p.m. in their opening game.

Kicking off the tournament will be No. 3 Sonoma State (36-19) as they battle fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association member No. 6 California State Dominguez Hills (34-21) at 1:00 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament continues Saturday with one game matching Friday's winners, followed by two elimination games. Sunday's schedule is slated for the championship game, with the chance of a second championship game if the remaining teams each have one loss.

Eight teams are selected for the tournament's first round, with the other four schools matching up at Arcata, Calif., home of No. 1 seed Humboldt State. Friday's first round games match No. 1 Humboldt State and No. 8 UC San Diego (33-22) and No. 4 Grand Canyon (39-17) and No. 5 Saint Martin's (39-14).

The winner from each site will advance to the West Region Super Regional, set for May 17-18 at a site to be determined. The winner of that tournament moves on to the NCAA Division II Softball Championships, scheduled for May 23-27 in Salem, Va., where it will contend for the national title against teams representing seven other regions.

All of the games in the tournament at Dixie State will have audio coverage, will a few games having video streaming through DixieAthletics.com website. Live stats will also be available for all tournament games on through
DixieAthletics.com.

Tickets for the tournament will be available at the gate, priced at $10 general admission and $7 for students and seniors and $4 for a child.

Game 1 - #3 Sonoma State vs. #6 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1 p.m.
Game 2 - #2 Dixie State vs. #7 Hawaii Hilo, 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, May 11
Game 3 - Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2, 11 a.m.
Game 4 - Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2 (loser eliminated), 1:30 p.m.
Game 5 - Winner Game 4 vs. Loser Game 3 (loser eliminated), 4 p.m.

Sunday, May 12
Game 6 - Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 5, Noon
Game 7 - Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 5 (if remaining teams each have one loss), 2:30 p.m.
