Coffey and Gelter Help Red Storm Salvage Split With Hawaii Hilo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HILO, HI -- After losing the first game of a doublheader 5-0 to Hawaii Hilo, No. 23 Dixie State used a masterful performance from senior pitcher Kate Coffey (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) in game two and win 2-1 in eight innings at Hilo, Hawaii.

Coffey allowed a run in the bottom of the first inning and proceeded to force 15 groundouts and 5 flyouts and pitch a complete game to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) helped force the extra frame, by hitting a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1.

After a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning, Coffey forced the Vulcans to line into a double play and strand the winning run.

In the Red Storm 8th inning, Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) hit a one out double down the right field line and Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) followed with the game winning RBI to center field.

Leading the Red Storm eight hit attack was Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) and Sherwin who each had two.

In game one it was all the Vulcans as they handed the Red Storm their third straight loss by winning 5-0.

Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) pitched three innings and dropped to 5-4 on the season.

Gelter led DSU with two hits.

With the split the Red Storm improve to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in the PWC. Hawaii Hilo is 14-12 and 5-3 in the PWC.

Dixie State continues their ten game Hawaiian road trip on Saturday with a double header at Chaminade.
