Storm Lose in 10 innings, Split with Coyotes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.  – Dixie State split a doubleheader with Cal State San Bernardino on Monday afternoon at Coyote Park. The Red Strom defeated the the Coyotes 8-0 in five innings and lost 12-11 in ten innings in game two.

In game one, Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School), Siera Phillips (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School), and Marla Retier hit home runs to help the Red Storm to victory. It was more than enough support for starter Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School), who threw a four-hit shutout in a game called after five innings. Duncan allowed only three hits and was effective by not walking any batters.

Reiter, Sherwin, Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) and Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) each had two hits in the DSU 12-hit attack.

Game 2: Coyotes 12, Dixie State 11 (10 innings)

In game two, the Red Storm jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead only to see the Coyotes claw their way back in the bottom of the first. CSUSB's career leader in home runs Britney Butler hit a two run shot that keyed a five-run inning and allowed the Coyotes their first lead of the day. Three DSU errors extended the inning for the CSUSB.

The Red Storm would bounce back with two runs in the second inning by capitalizing on two Coyote errors. DSU took back the lead in the third on a Brooke Budge (Springville, UT/Springville High School) 2RBI single to left field.

The Coyotes were down 9-7 entering the bottom of the seventh when they came alive to force extra innings. The Red Storm continued to commit errors and give the home Coyotes oppurtunites to force extra innings. Two unearned runs scored in the bottom of the seventh and an uneared run in the ninth allowed a run after DSU took a 10-9 lead in the top of the ninth.

With the score tied 10-10, the international tiedbreaker went into effect.

Dixie State placed Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) on second and she came around to score on Rochelle Jenkins (Mira Loma, CA/Roosevelt High School) single.

In the 10th, Butler was placed on second and she scored on Ferguson's double, who then advanced to third on the throw.

Dixie State then intentionally walked the next hitters – Leffingwell and Lievanos, bringing Amanda Lopez to the plate. She flew out to left and J. Lopez stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs.

She earned the heroine title on this day when she delivered a two-out single to left that brought in Ferguson.

For the Coyotes, Ferguson had four hits and Charlotte Galzote went 4-for-6. Butler finished with three RBI.

For Dixie State, Hine and Sherwin each had two hits. Starting pitcher Kate Coffey (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) was chased in the first and retuned to pitch the final inning and earned the loss and dropped to 5-4 on the season. Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) pitched eight innings in the middle. She allowed no earned runs and was dealt a no decision.

The Red Storm defense committed eight errors in game two. It was the third time this season and the second time against CSUSB they have done it.

This was the last road trip of the regular season for the Red Storm. They will begin their 12-game home stand with a doubleheader against Division I rival Southern Utah University on Tuesday at 3 pm at Karl Brooks Field.
