Red Storm Sweep ARTU, Run Streak to 10 Games

SAINT GEORGE, UT -- Dixie State University ran its winning streak to ten games today with a doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art, 7-4 and 4-2 at Karl Brooks Field.

The Red Storm (23-8, 14-4 PWC) jumped out in front in the first inning after Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) drew a walk and Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) hit her 10th home run of the season to over the scoreboard in right field to give DSU the 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, DSU loaded the bases and Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) hit a grand slam to center field, putting DSU up 6-0. The Storm added one more run in the third on Hine's sacrifice fly that scored Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) from third base.

Starter Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) pitched a complete game, striking out five, but did surrender four runs on six hits to improve to 11-2 on the season.

The Urban Knights scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and added two more in the seventh. But, it was enough to overcome the damage that was already done by Red Storm hitters.

Gelter led the DSU nine hit attack with two hits.

In game two, ARTU took their first lead of the series 1-0 by scoring a run in the top of the first inning off Red Storm starter Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School). They managed a run by not getting a hit, but being hit to leadoff the game and three walks that followed.

Snow settled down by pitiching four no-hit innings before Jessica Martin singled deep in the hole at shortstop to lead off the fifth inning. ARTU followed with an infield single and a walk to load the bases and cut into the 2-1 Red Storm lead. The Urban Knight's Taylor Thurman followed with an RBI single to left field, knotting the game at 2-2 and chasing Red Storm starter Snow from the game.

For the second consecutive day, Kate Coffey (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) entered in relief and forced a fly out to centerfield to end the ARTU threat.

The Red Storm responded in the bottom half of the fifth when Judkins led the inning off with a single down the left field line. She stole second on the next pitch for her 21st stolen base of the season. Hine followed with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt to move Judkins to third base.

Brown followed with a double just over the bag at third base and into the left field corner to give DSU the 3-2 lead.

After a perfect sixth inning for Coffey, the Storm added another run when Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) singled to center scoring pinch runner Kristie Johnson (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School) from third base.

Coffey ptiched two and one third innings and allowing no hits and no runs, while striking out one to improve to 4-2 on the season.

DSU had nine hits in the game with Brown leading the way with three and Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) and Judkins adding two each.

During the weekend series, DSU pounded ARTU pitching for 47 hits and 36 runs.

Dixie State will hit the road for a PacWest four game series on Friday and Saturday with California Baptist and non-conference doubleheader on Monday with California State San Bernardino.
