Storm Roll to a Sweep of Hawaii Pacific

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HONOLULU, HI -- The No. 22 ranked Dixie State softball won a pair of nail biters 4-2 and 3-2 over Pacific West opponent Hawaii Pacific today at Howard A. Okita Field.

The series originally scheduled for Monday but was rained out and rescheduled for today.

In game one the Red Storm (15-8, 6-4 PWC) use a pair of home runs to take home the victory over the Sea Warriors (8-10, 1-7 PWC).

Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) hit her first home run of the year in the second inning to put the Red Storm on the board. Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) helped DSU capitalize on an HPU error and hit a three run home run in the fourth inning to give DSU the 4-2 lead.

Starting pitcher Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) improved to 7-2 on the season with a solid performance. She threw 141 pitches, walking five batters, striking out one and giving up eight hits. Despite the extended performance, she made key pitches to strand 10 Sea Warriors on base.

DSU only managed four hits, two for Sherwin, one for Bufton and one for Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School).

In game two, Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) pitched three no-hit innings and allowed two runs, walking three, and giving up six hits in her complete game performance to improve to 6-4.

The two teams exchanged blows through three innings, but capitalized in the fourth.

Siera Phillips (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) led off the fourth with a double to left field and Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) followed with a single to center field. Gelter would follow by swiping second base for Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) who singled to right field scoring Phillips, but Gelter was cut down at the plate.

Bufton followed with a double down the right field line advancing Reiter to third base.

With two outs, Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) singled to right field scoring Reiter and Bufton followed by scoring on a throwing error by the right fielder. DSU leads 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth the Sea Warriors also added a pair of runs. Tesoro led off with a double to break up the no-hitter and would score on a triple by Elderts. Morrow followed with a single, plating Elderts for the second HPU run. Snow would pitch out of the jam only allowing the two runs.

Both teams failed to score the rest of game, despite having a few opportunites.

DSU finished with 10 hits, with Reiter, Bufton and Phillips each with two.

The Red Storm continue their road trip with a four-game series with BYU Hawaii tomorrow and Thursday. Both days the games begin at 5:00 pm MT.
