Softball Splits Day Two At Desert Stinger Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS -- In the first game of day two of the Desert Stinger Invitational, sophomore pitcher Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) led the No. 24 ranked Dixie State softball team to a 3-1 victory by striking out seven Sonoma State batters. In game two the Red Storm dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 extra inning game to No. 11 Cal State Dominguez Hills at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.

Making her second start of the season, Duncan was electric all day long. She pitched out of several jams and even forced a few big groundouts with SSU runners on base. She allowed one run in the fourth inning, but she never broke and used a solid defensive performance by the Red Storm.

Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) continued to make herself known early in the season by hitting her fourth home run of the season in the first inning to give DSC a 2-0 lead. The home run matches her 2012 total only four games into the season and she has a team high 13 RBI.

The other Red Storm run came in the third inning when Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) had an RBI single to center field.  Cue and Bufton each had two hits for DSC.

The Toros jumped on starter Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) in the first inning on a 2 RBI double to centerfield to give the Toros a 2-0 lead thru one.  CSUDH start Stephanie Jimenez held the Red Storm hitless thru five and one third innings.

Bufton deposited the Jimenez pitch over the center field fence to cut the Toro lead to 2-1. Brooke Budge (Springville, UT/Springville High School) and Shelia Gelter also added RBI singles in the inning to give DSC a 3-2 lead.

Kate Coffey (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) replaced starter Snow in the top of the sixth and allowed an unrearned run to tied the score at 3-3 thru six.

Siera Phillips (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) led off the seventh with an RBI double and Cue followed with RBI single up the middle to give DSC a 4-3 lead. But, the Toros would not go away. After forcing a foulout, the Toros hit a solo home run to tie the game up at 4-4 and force extra innings.

It appeared the Red Storm would capatalize and score a run in the 8th after loading the bases, but the Cue deep fly ball was forced to fall just short and was caught at the warning track. The Toros first batter of the inning homered to right center to give them the 5-4 victory.

The Red Storm drop to 4-1 overall as Coffey loses her first game of the season and CSUDH improves to 7-2.

Dixie State concludes the tournament tomorrow with games against Fort Lewis and Colorado-Colorado Springs. First pitch is schedled for 12:30 pm MT.
