Duncan and Sherwin Lead Red Storm to Win at NFCA

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) had two hits including an RBI double and Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) pitched a complete game 3-hittter to lead No. 24 Dixie State to a 2-1 victory over Colorado Mesa. The Red Storm dropped their morning game 2-1 to Central Oklahoma.

Duncan had eight strikeouts and improves to 5-1 and helps Dixie State improve to 9-4 on the season.

After three innings of scoreless play, Siera Phillips (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) led the inning off with a single to center field. #Bailee Freeleand entered as a pinch runner. Two batters later, Sherwin deposited a 1-0 pitch into right center field for an RBI double scoring Freeland from first base.

The Red Storm added another run in the fifth inning when Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) reached on a one-out infield single.The speedy Judkins followed by stealing second and third base.

Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) then hit a 2-2 pitch to deep right field for an RBI sacrifice fly that would be the eventual game winner.

Duncan cruised through six and one third innings before allowing a home run to center field. DSU center fielder Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) had it tracked down and in her glove but as she hit the portable fence the ball popped out and fell to the ground. Duncan then induced a groundout and a strikeout to pickup the win.

Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) had three hits and Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) hit an RBI triple in the third inning, but two Red Storm miscues allowed the Bronchos to score two unearned runs and steal the 2-1 win from DSU.

Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) allowed eight hits, three walks and had one strikeout, but pitched well enough to win but drops to 4-2 on the season.

Dixie State finished 4-2 in the tournament and now return home after playing two grueling weekends on the road. They open Pacific West Conference action on Saturday morning at 11:00 am against Dominican (CA) at Karl Brooks Field.
