DSU Softball Wins Twice at NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Dixie State softball won twice today at the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic. The Red Storm defeated Cal State San Bernardino 11-9 and Chowan 7-3.

In the opener, DSU (8-3) pounded out 11 hits and scored 11 runs despite setting a new record for the most errors in a game with eight.

The Red Storm opened up the scoring with a Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) single up the middle followed bu a Siera Phillips (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) RBI triple to right center field. Two batters later, Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) singled up the middle scoring Phillips and giving DSC the early 2-0 lead.

The Coyotes (3-6) matched the Red Storm with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, getting to starter Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School). Duncan did strikeout the CSUSB batter with the bases loaded and hold them to just two runs.

Dixie State scored three more runs in the second inning to take the lead for good. Hine drew a bases loaded RBI walk and Gelter and RBI groundout.

Duncan earned the win (4-1) despite the less than stellar performance. She allowed five runs, three earned, walked six baters while striking four in four innings of work.

The Red Storm added five more runs in the fifth inning. Phillips tripled for the second time in the game to lead off the inning and Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to right field.

In relief of Duncan, pitcher Kate Coffey (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) pitched three strong innings to earn her first save of the season. She scattered three hits allowin four runs, all unearned, and struck out batters.

Phillips finished with three hits and 2RBI and Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) added two hits and RBI in the win.

GAME TWO - #24 DSU 7 CHOWAN 3

In the second game the Storm pounded out 12 hits to defeat Chowan (NC) 7-3.

Hine continued her sizzling pace with three hits and three RBI and Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) added three hits, including a solol home run down the left field line.

Phillips picked up two more hits, including a third triple of the day, and two RBI. Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) also had two hits.

Starter Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) pitched a complete game allowing seven hits, three runs, three walks and struck out two to move to 4-1 on the season.

DSU finishes the round robin portion of the tournament with a 3-1 record and advances to the semifinal of the silver bracket tomorrow against 9 am MT. They will play the winner or the loser of Augustana (SD) or Colorado Mesa at 11 am, depending on a win or loss.
