DSC splits at NFCA Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. – Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) pitched a complete game and struck out eight hitters as the No. 24 ranked Dixie State softball team defeated No. 23 ranked Molloy at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Leadoff Classic in Tucson.
 
Snow improves to 3-1 on the season by allowing just two runs despite giving up seven hits in the game.
 
Storm hitters struggled through the first two innings, as Molloy pitcher struck out five of the first six batters she faced. In the third inning, Nikki Chavez put DSC on the board when she homered to right center field to go up 1-0.
 
In the fourth inning the Red Storm manufactured two more runs. Hine singled and moved to third with the help of a Lion throwing error. Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) followed with a walk and pinch runner Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) and Hine stole second and home respectively. Judkins would add the second run on a Gelter single to shortstop and a second error by the Lions.
 
In the fifth inning, Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) singled to start the inning and was sacrificed to second base. Hine followed with an RBI triple down the right field line, her second hit of the game that gave DSC the 4-0 lead.
 
Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) led off the sixth inning with her 7th home run of the season, a solo shot down the right field line. Chavez followed with a double to right field and Reiter converted the final DSC run with an RBI double to right center.
 
The Lions drop to 0-2 despite getting a 10-strikeout performance from Megan Butterworth.
 
Hine, Chavez and Reiter each had two hits for DSC.

After taking an early 2-0 lead, Red Storm starter Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) surrendered a three-home run in the bottom half to give WTAM a 3-2 lead.
 
Duncan would not retire another hitter as she was chased from the game in the second inning. Despite allowing just two hits, she walked four batters, hit one and allowed eight runs, six earned to drop to 3-1.
 
Siera Phillips (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) and Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) each had two hits in the loss. Kate Coffey (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) entered and pitched the final five innings. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out six batters.
