Offense leads Red Storm to Split on Final Day of Desert Stinger

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS -- The potent offense of Dixie State helped salvage a split on the final day of the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas. No. 24 Dixie State dropped their morning game 6-5 to Fort Lewis before defeating UC Colorado Springs 9-0 in six innings.

With the win the Red Storm improve to 5-2 on the season. DSC hit six home runs today, including two more by Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) bringing her total to six on the season.

In the first game Fort Lewis pitcher Katie Watkins held the Red Storm hitless thru three and two thirds of an inning, before Cue broke up the bid with an infield single.

The Skyhawks offense continued to force the usually steady DSC defense into making routine plays, but they got them to break and the Red Storm committed three errors in the game.

DSC starter Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) dropped to 2-1 on the season, she pitched a complete game, but with the defensive miscues and the seven walks she allowed the team could not overcome all the obstacles.

Trying to jump start the offense in the fifth was Rochelle Jenkins (Mira Loma, CA/Roosevelt High School) who hit her first collegiate home run over the center field fence and cut into the FLC lead at 3-1. The Skyhawks would rebound with an RBI double to push their lead back to 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, another first came when Siera Phillips (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) hit a blast over the center field fence with Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) on base to cut the FLC lead to 4-3. After a pitching change, Cue belted her fifth home run of the year over the right center field fence to tie the game at 4-4.

Fort Lewis would not go away, but received some help from the DSC defense. With two outs and runners at second and third, Snow induced what would be an inning ending ground ball, but it was misplayed and two runners scored to give FLC the 6-4 lead.

Judkins lead the 7th off with an infield single and was moved to second on a ground out. Phillips followed with an RBI single that cut the lead to just one run at 6-5. Cue then came up and just missed on a ball that flew out to center to end the game.

DSC pounded out six hits in the game with Cue and Phillips each collecting two.

GAME 2 -- DSC 9 UCCS 0 (6)

With Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) in the circle and the Red Storm firing on all cylinders, they will be tough to beat and the Lions of UCCS ran into the ran wrong team.

Duncan threw her third complete game and second shutout by striking out seven batters and allowing just five hits to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The offense pounded out 13 hits in the game, with Judkins leading the way with three. Cue, Hine, Jenkins, and Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) each had two. Hine, Cue and NIcole Chavez all homered for DSC. The Red Storm now have 12 home runs in just seven games as a team.

Dixie State will travel again this next weekend to Tucson, AZ for the NFCA Division II Leadoff Challenge. They are scheduled to play five games over the three days. The open with West Texas A&M (5-0) at 3 pm and Malloy (0-0) at 7 pm.
