Women Drop PacWest Opener to Notre Dame de Namur

Box Score BELMONT, Calf. -- The Dixie State University women's basketball team lost their Pacifc West Conference opener tonight 84-76 to Notre Dame de Namur University at Walter Gleason Gymnasium in Belmont.

The Red Storm (1-4/0-1 PWC) dropped its second straight game, despite four players scoring in double figures. Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) led the way with 17 points.

Dixie State trailed 24-17 early in the first half after Gabriella Rodriguez (21 pts) hit a 3-pointer to open up a seven point Argonaut (2-5/1-0 PWC) lead. But the Red Storm were determined not to go away easy and bounced back with a three-pointer from Brianna White (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union) that capped off a 8-0 run to give DSU a 25-24 lead with 5:24 left.

The Argonauts responded with a run of their own to take a four point lead, but DSU fought back and took a 43-37 lead into intermission.

In the second half Dixie State's lead evaported within the first four minutes of the half, as NDNU took a 54-52 lead with 15:34 left in the game. The Argonauts quickly built a six point lead, before a Haleigh Emerine basket and two Austen Harris (Acworth, GA/Desert Vista) free-throws cut the lead to two points at 57-55 with 13:21 remaining.

NDNU then started to seperate themselves and lead by as many as 11 points and the Red Storm could never cut into the deficit more than seven points.

The Red Storm shot 40 (28-70)  percent from the field, including 48 points in the paint. But the long range shooting of 1-13 seemed to be the achilles heal of the Red Storm. They also outrebounded NDNU 53-39, but could not overcome three 20 plus point performnaces from the Argonauts. Maya Arlelianes led with 22 points.

Dixie State will take the day off tomorrow before making the short trip to Fresno to battle with Fresno Pacific on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm MT.
