Young Leads the Red Storm to Victory over Chaminade

Box Score ST GEORGE, UT – Looking to keep pace with the leaders in the Pacific West Conference, senior outside hitter Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul) led the Red Storm to an easy 25-20, 25-16, 25-13 victory over Chaminade tonight in the Student Activities Center.
 
Young had 12 kills in 17 attempts and hit. 588 for the match, she also added six digs and two block assists in the victory.
 
In the first set of the match the Red Storm (17-8/14-5 PWC) jumped out to an early 10-3 behind solid serving from Alex Anderson (Prescott, AZ/Prescott).
 
Chaminade (9-15,/6-13 PWC) responded with a  quick run to cut the lead to 14-10, but DSU followed by opening up a 23-15 lead.   After a 5-1 Silversword run, Makenzi Bird (Saint George, UT/Snow Canyon ) found the back corner of the surface for the final point of the first set.
 
After exchanging serves in the opening of the second game, DSU broke the 4-4 tie and built 20-14 lead, before Anderson once again led the Storm to a 25-16 victory with four straight solid serves. DSU hit .400 in the second game.
 
In the final game, the Storm cruised to a 25-13 victory to pick up their fourth straight victory.
 
DSU outhit the Silverswords .319 to .071 for the match, including eight team blocks to six blocks for CUH. Nicole Koehler (Sandy, UT/Alta), Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany), and Bird each added seven kills.
 
Shelby Sorenson (Lehi, UT/Lehi) led DSU with 32 assist and Anderson added 11 digs.
 
"We came ready to play tonight," said head coach Robyn Felder. "I liked the fire we had and we seem to be peaking at the right time."
 
DSU closes out their regular season on Saturday against second place Point Loma. The Sea Lions have a ½ game lead over DSU. First serve will be in the Student Activities at 12 p.m. A short ceremony prior to the match with honor the three seniors, Sheila Uluave, Pauline VonDinklage (American Samoa/Fagaitua) and Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul), prior to the match.
