"A WHOLE NEW U" HOMECOMING GAME

Dixie State celebrates its first Homecoming week as a university this week and closing out the festivities under the theme "A Brand New U" is the Red Storm's second meeting of the year against Humboldt State. The contest will kick off at 6:05 p.m. from Hansen Stadium. Broadcast coverage includes ESPN SportsRadio 106.1 FM and CEC-Television on Baja channel 22.

RED STORM VS. THE JACKS

The Red Storm broke a seven-game losing streak to the Jacks with a 49-24 win at the Redwood Bowl on Sept. 28. HSU still holds the all-time advantage winning 10 of 15 games since Dixie State became an NCAA school in 2006. A win for the home team would even up the series at four games each. The Jacks won the first overall meeting in 2006, played at Hansen, 48-28. Dixie State took the next three home matchups in 2007 (17-10), 2008 (16-6) and 2009 (24-20) before surrendering the next three to HSU in blowouts (49-14, 45-30, 49-13).

WOLVES WIN OFFENSIVE BATTLE IN ST. GEORGE

Ryan Bergman passed for more than 400 yards for the second time this season against Dixie State and Western Oregon won a shootout that featured 1,109 yards in total offense before 4,022 fans at Hansen Stadium. WOU never trailed in winning its fourth game in its last five outings.  The Wolves led 40-20 midway through the third quarter, but had to fight off a comeback by the Red Storm, who pulled to within six points early in the fourth quarter after back-to-back touchdown passes from Griff Robles (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) to Mitch Frei (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) of 22 and 24 yards. WOU, however, was able to put together an 11-play, 80-yard drive for the clinching touchdown with 2:11 remaining.  Devauntee Hoffman got the score on a 10-yard run. Robles completed 38 of 56 passes for a GNAC-season high 460 yards.  Tight end Joe Don Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) had 14 receptions for 170 yards and Frei had seven for 103.  Duncan is the third player this fall in the GNAC to have 14 catches in a game. Western Oregon finished with a 567-542 advantage in total offense, out rushing Dixie 160-82. Defensive lineman Jake Miller (Tremonton, UT/Bear River), DB Zac Christian (Plain City, UT/Fremont) and linebacker Jake Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) all had six tackles for the Red Storm.  Christian also intercepted two passes.

NOTABLES FROM THE WOU GAME:

Dixie State scored in all four quarters for the first time since Oct. 22, 2011, a home loss against Central Washington. A fourth quarter field goal block by K.J. Boyer (St. George, UT/Pine View) was the first since Sean Gibson (Herriman, UT/Riverton) had one in the 2012 home finale versus Azusa Pacific (Nov. 3, 2012). Griff Robels became only the thrid DSU quarterback to throw for over 400 yards in a game – his record-setting 453 yards was 30 yards better than an effort from Stefan Cantwell against WOU on Oct. 20, 2011 and Judd Thompson's 417 yards at Montana State on Sept. 12, 2009. Joe Don Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) and Mitch Frei (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) each surpassed 100 yards receiving for the second consecutive game.

A WIN BY DIXIE STATE WOULD...

• Be the first season sweep of a GNAC opponent since 2010 - Simon Fraser.

• Match the win total from the 2012 season, when the Red Storm went 3-8.

• Be the 11th win in the month of October since the NCAA D-II transition in 2006; DSU is 10-23 in October games

Duncan was named to the D2Football.com Preseason All-American List on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Two seasons ago, Duncan earned all-league, all-region and multiple All-American honors after leading the country in receptions and yardage for a tight end. Phil Steele listed him as the 27th best draft eligible TE available and Lindy's Sports Annuals "Look Ahead" named Duncan as the ninth best TE in the country.
