DSC downs Azusa Pacific in first league meeting

AZUSA, Calif. – The question arose after Dixie State's tough home win on Thursday against Grand Canyon – would there be a let down on the road at Azusa Pacific? From the seven-minute mark of the first half on, the answer was an emphatic no.
 
McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson) led all DSC scorers with 16 points and Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) thrilled a partisan crowd from his hometown with two monster alley-oop dunks leading Dixie State to a convincing 85-57 win over the host Cougars in Pacific West Conference play.
 
A fourth consecutive victory boosted Dixie State to 11-4 on the year and 6-1 in the PacWest.
 
Knotted in a physical battle early, DSC had a 24-21 lead at the seven-minute mark. Five minutes later, the Red Storm held APU (5-6, 3-1 PWC) scoreless and rattled off 16 points unanswered. Curtis Papenfuss (Happy Valley, OR/Clackamas) hit four shots including a pair of 3-pointers for 10 of the points off the bench.
 
DSC bumped the lead to 19 before settling for a 44-31 halftime advantage.
 
Troy Leaf hit a pair of triples early in the second half to keep the Cougars within striking distance. Trailing by nine, APU's chances slipped away on a DSC 9-0 run beginning and ending with Massey shots from distance.
 
Robbins added to the second half highlights throwing down two alley-oop dishes from Massey and DeQuan Thompson (Las Vegas, NV/Lake Mead Christian Academy).
 
The lead hit 30 points at one point, allowing head coach Jon Judkins the luxury to empty his bench. Robbie Nielson (Gresham, OR/Barlow) took advantage with five points in the final minutes in his first game back from injuring his hand.
 
Massey hit six of his 10 shots from the field. Robbins was 7-of-10 for 15 points and nine rebounds while Papenfuss added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
 
The Storm was held below their season field-goal average, but hit a respectable 30-of-61 (49.2 percent). DSC held APU to 33 percent on the night and 5-of-24 from the 3-point arc.
 
Dixie State returns home next Saturday for its second matchup with California Baptist at 7:30 p.m. The Lancers have bounced back with a league win at Point Loma after losing to DSC on Jan. 5 in Riverside.
