Red Storm lose north of the border 41-28 vs. SFU

Palmer rushes for 4 TD against DSC

Box Score

BURNABY, B.C., Canada – Senior tailback Bo Palmer had three rushing touchdown entering Saturday's conference game against Dixie State on Saturday. He carried the ball 17 times for 145 yards with four touchdowns leading the Clan of Simon Fraser to a 41-28 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win at Terry Fox Field.

Dixie State racked up 410 yards of offense – the majority in the second half – yet fell to 2-3 on the season and 2-2 in the GNAC. Sophomore wide receiver Randon Willard (Santa Clara, UT/Snow Canyon) made seven catches for a career-high 112 yards to highlight the DSC offense.

The Clan picked up its first league win and snapped a three-game losing streak (2-3, 1-3 GNAC).

The Clan posted touchdowns on three of its first four possessions. Sophomore quarterback Trey Wheeler (26-40, 312 yards) connected with tight end Mathis Baumbach from seven yards to complete a successful eight-play opening drive. A long pass of 52 yards highlighted the Clan's second drive. Palmer posted the TD with a two-yard run.

Dixie State took advantage of a Wheeler fumble deep in Clan territory. On fourth down, junior quarterback Griff Robles (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) (4-8, 54 yards) found sophomore Brock Johnson (South Weber, UT/Northridge) in the end zone to pull within six points.

Palmer answered quickly on the subsequent drive with a quick TD scamper from 37 yards for a 20-7 lead.

Midway through the second quarter, DSC turned the signal calling to sophomore Kaleo Nawahine (Fruitland, ID/Fruitland) after stopping the Clan on a fake FG attempt. He completed five of six passes on his opening drive and handed the ball to #A.J. Johnson# for a nine-yard TD run.

DSC trailed at the half 20-14 with the thought they would hold the ball to start the second half. The tide quickly turned after the Red Storm punted after three plays and SFU scored on the first play of their drive. Wheeler hit UNLV transfer Lamar Durant (9 cathces for 116 yards) from 23 yards. Later in the quarter, Palmer sped past every DSC defender for another touchdown, this one from 54 yards out. He added his final scamper after a Nawahine fumble near the DSC goal line set up an easy one-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter.

The Dixie State wide receivers benefitted from DSC trailing in the fourth quarter. With a short field drive beginning at the SFU 34, Nawahine tossed a scoring pass to sophomore Beau Hoskins (Blackfoot, ID/Blackfoot) from the three.

Late in the game, Willard was rewarded for his hard work throughout the game by hauling in touchdown pass for 43 yards.

Junior linebacker Jake Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) paced the Red Storm defense with nine tackles and a forced fumble. Safeties Cameron Greene (Brigham CIty. UT/Box Elder) and Daniel Moffett (Kaysville, UT/Davis) each added seven tackles.

Dixie State returns home for an October 6 showdown with Wildcats of Central Washington. Kickoff from Hansen Stadium is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The GNAC-leaders (4-1, 4-0) defeated the ninth-ranked Jacks of Humboldt State 31-3 on Saturday.
