Volleyball Rebounds to Defeat Hawaii Pacific in Five Games

Box Score

HONOLULU, HI - The Dixie State Volleyball team needed five games to upend Hawaii Pacific 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 22-25, 15-11 at St Andrews Priory on Saturday night in Honolulu.

The Red Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the Sea Warriors. In game one, trailing 16-13 Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul) served an ace that sent the Red Storm on a 12-5 run to steal the first game from HPU.

In game two, trailing 7-3 and 8-4, the Red Storm capitalized on errors by the Sea Warriors to take game two 25-21.

In game three it was all Hawaii Pacific and in game four after trailing early, the Red Storm battle back to tie the match at 20. But, service and hitting errors eluded the Red Storm's oppurtunity to end the match early and forced the fifth game.

In the match deciding fifth game, the Red Storm and Sea Warriors traded points, until Brita Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) and Mercedes O'Neal (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan) put DSC up by three and Young closed out the match with a kill.

Head Coach Robyn Felder said, "It was a big win for us. We really needed a win coming home. We needed play great, but we played well enough to win."

The Red Storm managed to hit just .077 for the match, but did play solid at the nets recording 17.0 team blocks.

Young and Jensen each finished with nine kills. Pauline VonDinklage (American Samoa/Fagaitua) had eight block assists and Janessa Koelliker (Kaysville, UT/Davis) had one block solo and seven block assists for the match. Alex Anderson (Prescott, AZ/Prescott) led the defensive attack with 33 digs.

With the win, Dixie State improves to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the PacWest.

HPU managed to hit just .079 in the loss, but had three players in double figure kils with Samantha Rummans finishing with 13. The Sea Warriors drop to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in PacWest play.
