Turnovers cost Dixie State in 17-9 loss at Adams State

Six turnovers haunt Red Storm in Colorado

Box Score

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Dixie State College football was not at a loss for opportunities Saturday in the first-ever night game played at Rex Stadium in Alamosa, Colo. Those opportunities fizzled as the Red Storm turned the ball over six times, including twice in the end zone, in a 17-9 loss to host Adams State in non-conference play.

Robles at ASU

DSC (0-1) accumulated 419 yards of total offense, including 123 yards on the ground; the first time the team has eclipsed the century mark since Oct. 2, 2010 (193, at Simon Fraser).

The Red Storm bested Adams State (1-0) in nearly every offensive statistical category – rush yards, pass yards, first downs, third down conversions (7-of-18).

Junior quarterback Griff Robles (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) threw for 296 in his Dixie State debut, connecting on 26 of 43 pass attempts. Nonetheless, Robles was intercepted four times – twice in the end zone and once near the goal line. DSC added two fumbles for a six-turnover night.

Both teams squandered scoring chances in the first quarter. ASU drove 33 yard on the opening possession, setting up David Van Voris for a 57-yard field goal attempt. The kick had the distance, yet sailed wide right. Later, Dixie State put together a 12-play drive setting up third-and-goal from the four-yard line. Robles' pass to the front of the end zone ended in the intercepting hands of Cariel Brooks and returned two yards to the ASU three.

Van Voris put the Grizzlies on the board early in the 2nd quarter with a 34-yard field goal.

AJ Johnson rushing TD at ASU

Dixie State responded on the subsequent drive. On the sixth play of the drive, junior running back #A.J. Johnson# threaded a seam in the middle of the ASU defense. He scampered 33 yards for the touchdown. A missed point after attempt put the Red Storm up 6-3.

The lead was short lived after ASU recovered a Kaleo Nawahine (Fruitland, ID/Fruitland) fumble at the Dixie State 40-yard line, setting up a short field. Michael Carl leaped over his offensive line from one-yard out for the score and a 10-6 lead that held until halftime.

DSC took the ball in the second half after deferring the winning coin toss. The Red Storm drove into the red zone, but settled for a field goal from Michael Meyers (St. George, UT/Dixie) (22 yards).

The Grizzlies pushed the lead up to eight points when Cody Davies (15-31, 200 yards) lured the defense on a play-action option and tossed a perfect pass to Drew Edwards for a 44-yard touchdown on a quick possession. Dixie State held the ball for over 12 minutes of the third quarter.

Defenses stepped up in what ended up as a scoreless fourth quarter. ASU stuffed two consecutive Red Storm drives on fourth-and one attempts - first on the goal line, then near midfield.

Adams State had an opportunity ice the game away, but lined up to punt with less than two minutes remaining. The snap sailed over the head of Van Voris and gave Dixie State another chance deep in ASU territory. DSC drove down to the one-yard line, setting up third-and goal. Robles took the snap and fired to the left corner of the end zone. The pass was picked off by Devin Simmons, resulting in an ASU touchback to wrap up the game.

Fumble recovery at ASU

Zack Fox (Spanish Fork. UT/Spanish Fork HS) notched his first 100-yard receiving game, hauling in 10 receptions for 108 yards. On the defensive side, junior Jake Duncan (Corona, CA/Notre Dame) also set a career-best with 13 tackles, including 2.0 for loss. Linebacker Matt Tanuvasa (Laie, HI/Southridge) had six tackles in his DSC debut, while senior cornerback Ray Chapman (Compton, CA/Compton) matched Tanuvasa with six takedowns. Cache Morgan (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan) recovered the lone ASU fumble, forced by Tim Ehringer.

Dixie State opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next Saturday at home against Western Oregon. Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live coverage on Dixie State All-Access online and ESPN SportsRadio.
