SB: Red Storm Eliminated From NCAA Tournament

Box Score

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The No. 24 ranked and sixth-seeded UC San Diego defeated the three-seeded Dixie State softball 10-0 in five innings to advance to the NCAA Super Regional in Seaside, Calif. at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Tritons (39-20) advanced after defeating the Red Storm (38-13) 3-2 in the first game of the day to force the winner-take-all game.

Camille Gaito won her 27th game and held Dixie State to no runs, striking out six and allowing six hits. She pitched in all five games for the defending National Champiions.

UC San Diego go to senior starter Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) in the second inning. After a leadoff walk and a sac bunt, Folta forced a deep fly out to centerfield for the second out. Folta then hit the next batter to put runners at first and second with the Tritons best hitter Lesovsky coming to the plate.

Folta forced her to hit a two hop ground ball to second that appeared to be the third out of the inning, but the first base umpire ruled that she hit it off her foot. Despite the debate from Red Storm coach Randy Simkins, the call stood. She would follow with an RBI single to left field. UCSD would also add two more runs to take  a 3-0 lead.

DSC would battle back in the bottom half of the second, but would strand two runners in the inning.

Trailing 3-0, Simkins opted for Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) in the circle. UCSD scored six runs on three hits including a grand slam by Portugal to break the game wide open and take a 9-0 lead.

Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) singled to centerfield in the 3rd inning to extend her hitting streak to 25 games. She also added a singled off the center field fence in the 5th inning.

Both Brown and Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) had two hits in the game.
