SB: Red Storm Earn #3 Seed, travel to Seaside, Calif., Play UC San Diego In 1st Round

REGION BRACKETS

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division II Softball Committee has selected the 64 teams that will participate in the 2012 NCAA Division II Softball Championship. Dixie State College received the third-seed and the PacWest automatic qualifier in the West Region and begins their journey Friday in Seaside, Calif.

The Red Storm (36-11) draw defending National Champion UC San Diego in the first round game played at Monterey Bay. The Tritons are the No. 6-seed after finishing the season with a 35-19 record and winning the California Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) Tournament Championship.

Dixie State, directed by head coach Randy Simkins, makes their fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In 2009, the Red Storm swept through the sub-regional defeating CSU Monterey Bay 7-6 in eight innings and then beating Hawaii Pacific on successive days 5-0 and 3-2. DSC beat CSU Stanislaus two games to one in the Super Regional to earn a spot in Salem. Two quick losses to North Georgia and Indianapolis ended the Red Storm season. In 2010, DSC fell to Chico State 4-3 on the final day of the SSU sub-regional. In 2011, DSC fell to Sonoma State 3-2 in extra innings and was eliminated by Hawaii Pacific 7-2.

The No. 2 seed Cal State Monterey Bay (42-10) will host the Great Northwest automatic qualifier No. 7 seed Montana State Billings (32-16) in the other game at Monterey Bay.

Pac West Conference rival Grand Canyon (No. 8, 34-19) will travel to play the region's top seed and host Cal State Dominguez Hills (41-11), who received an at-large berth from the CCAA. The other game from this site is No. 4 Chico State (34-14) and Somona State (35-17). Both teams are members of the CCAA.

Four teams will participate at each of 16 regional sites in double-elimination tournaments. Regional competition will be held May 4-6. Winners will advance to the super regionals May 11-12. The finals will be held May 16-19 at Knights Field in Louisville, Kentucky and will be hosted by Bellarmine University and the Louisville Sports Commission.
