SB: Red Storm Clinch Automatic Qualifier with 14-3 and 11-1 Sweep of Grand Canyon

PHOENIX -- The Dixie State softball clinched the automatic berth for the PacWest with a 14-3 (6) and 11-1 (5) win over rival Grand Canyon today at Stapleton-Pierson Field in Phoenix.

WInners of the 14 straight, the Red Storm (35-10, 25-5) needed just six innings to win game one and five innings to prevail in game two. On March 11th, DSC was 7-7 and since that point they have won 28 of their last 31 games.

Despite Cal Baptist winning the PacWest tilte, the Red Storm clinched 2nd place with the two wins and the AQ because CBU is in year one of the transition from NAIA to D2 and not eligible for postseason play.

In game one, The Red Storm pounded the Antelopes (33-18, 20-8 PWC) for 14 runs and 13 hits. Junior Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) led the way with three hits, including a grand slam home run in the seventh inning.

Freshman Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School), Senior Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School), and Junior Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) each had two hits.  Freshman Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) hit a three run home run in the third inning to give DSC a 5-0 lead, it was her team leading 10th of the season.

Senior Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and three runs to improve to 17-3 on the season.

In game two the Red Storm scored eight runs in the 2nd and three in the third to finish off Grand Canyon in five innings.

Brown had 2 RBI and two more hits, both doubles, that extended her hitting streak to 19 games. Sherwin, junior Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) and Brown all finished with two hits. Eight Red Storm players had RBI in the game and they finished with nine hits.

Sophomore Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) allowed three hits, no earned runs and struck four to improve to 14-4 on the season.

DSC is currently ranked #3 in the West Region and will find out on Monday morning where they will play in the West Region sub regional tournament May 4-6.

The Red Storm and the Antelopes finish their four game series tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
