SB: Storm continue winning ways in DH sweep of Dominican

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Playing for the third consecutive day in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Dixie State College softball team picked up a pair of close victories, 3-2 and 2-1, over the Dominican Penguins at McInnis Park on Monday.

The seventh and eight consecutive victories since the Red Storm played in the Turlock Tournament of Champions vaulted DSC to an overall record of 29-10 and 19-5 in the Pacific West Conference. Winless in league, Dominican put up good showings despite falling to 3-40 on the season (0-25 PWC).

After allowing the opening run to the Penguins, Dixie State found its equalizer in the second frame. Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School) singled to center with two outs, scoring fellow senior Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School).

DSC tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) led off the inning with a double and scored on a Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) RBI single. Later, Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) lined an RBI single to center.

Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) got the win (15-3) scattering two runs on four hits over five innings. Kate Pinder earned a two-inning save after allowing one hit.

In game two, Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) held the Penguins to one run on four hits while fanning seven in a complete game effort. Her victory tumbled in the balance over the final inning and a half.

Scoreless going into the bottom half of the sixth, Dixie State – playing as the home team – finally broke the seal on the scoreboard. Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) singled to center with two outs bringing Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) home for a 1-0 lead.

Dominican struck back quickly with a triple and an RBI hit. They had a go-ahead run at third base with one out before Snow (11-4) induced a pop-up and a strikeout to quell the threat.

In the home half of the seventh, Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) tripled to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Bufton hit a blooper into right field for the walk-off victory.

Dixie State closes the road trip Tuesday with another doubleheader against Dominican. First pitch is at 1 p.m. Mountain (12 noon Pacific).
