Higgins Walk-Off Single Gives DSC 5-4 Win Over ART U and Series Split

BRISBANE, Calif. – A three run seventh inning gave the Dixie State College softball team a 5-4 win over Academy of Art and a split of the PacWest doubleheader today at Mission Blue Field. The Red Storm dropped game one 5-4.
 
Trailing 4-2, Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) and Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) doubled to lead off the bottom half of the seventh inning to bring DSC within 4-3.
 
With Mendenhall on 2nd, Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) drew a five pitch walk to put runners at first and third with no outs. Mendenhall advanced on a wild pitch during the Cue at bat.
 
After a first pitch ball, Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt and Mendenhall scored from third just past the diving tag of ART U's catcher to tie the game at 4-4.
 
Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) then executed a sac bunt moving Chavez and Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School), pinch running for Cue, to second and third base with one out.
 
The game winning hit came when Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School) picked up her third hit of the game and biggest, a single to left field that scored Snow from third base. The Red Storm salvaged a series split with the 5-4 win.
 
Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) picked up the win in relief, pitching two and two thirds innings allowing one run and striking out three batters. She improves to 4-3 on the season.
 
 Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) and Chavez each had two hits as well in the 13-hit Red Storm attack.
 
In game one today, despite jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, ART U scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to time the game and took the lead in the fourth and held on for the 5-4 victory.
 
Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) had two hits and Chavez, Brown, and Cue each had RBI in the loss. Snow allowed five runs on six hits in four innings of work and took her fourth consecutive loss of the season dropping to 3-4.
 
The Red Storm improved to 8-7 on the season and overall and 3-5 in PacWest play. The Urban Knights dropped to 7-16 overall and 3-5 in PacWest play.
 
Dixie State travels to Odgen, Utah for a non-conference doubleheader against D1 Weber State University on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
