SB: Red Storm Split Doubleheader with Academy of Art

BRISBANE, Calif. -- The Dixie State College softball team split a PacWest doubleheader today with Academy of Art University. The Red Storm dropped game one 3-1, but bounced back to win the night cap 8-5.

DSC improved to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in the PacWest.

In the opener, all the runs were scored in the final frame. Red Storm right fielder Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) gave DSC a 1-0 lead when she hit her home run of the season to left field.

DSC starter Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School) was cruising through six innings. She had seven strikeouts and allowed just five hits. But, the Urban Knights tied the game on a home run to center field. The next batter reached on an error and Thurman hit a walk-off home run to left field to give ARTU the 3-1 victory.

In the closing game, Dixie State jumped on top first by scoring four first inning runs. Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) led the inning off with a single up middle and Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) doubled to right field to give DSC a 1-0 lead. Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) hit her first pitch she was to left field for a double scoring Hine from second base.

After a walk and a ground out, a Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) single scored both Brown and Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) to give the Red Storm a 4-0 lead.

The Red Storm held serve until the fourth inning Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) ht and RBI double to give DSC a 5-1 lead.

Brown led the fifth off with a double to centerfield, Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) walked and Sherwin followed with a double to right center fiedl. Chavez singled up the middle, picking up her 3rd and 4th RBI of the game to give Dixie State an 8-5 lead.

Red Storm starter Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) pitched five inning allowing five runs while striking out five batters. She improves to 3-2 on the season. Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) pitched the final two scoreless frames to pick a her second save fo the season.

The Red Storm and the Urban Knights conclude their four game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Mountain time.
