SAINT GEORGE – The Dixie State softball team split their season opener today with Cal State San Bernardino 1-4 and 5-2 at Karl Brooks Field.

In game one, Dixie State (1-1) had plenty of chances and just could not capitalize in key situations. They stranded 11 runs on base and fell just short.

Coach Randy Simkins said, “We missed opportunities to execute it excellent hitters counts and we need to credit their pitchers. They did a great job.”

DSC took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) scored on a double steal.

The Coyotes (1-3) jumped on DSC starter Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) in the top of the third inning by rattling off three hits and plating three runs in the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning CSUSB shortstop Britney Butler homered to left field to give them a 4-1 lead.

CSUSB Courtney Wilhelms improved to 1-1  in a complete game five hitter despite walking eight Red Storm batters.

Junior shortstop Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) went two for two in the Red Storm five hit attack. Folta dropped to 0-1 on the season.

In the second game, Dixie State rode the back of sophomore pitcher Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School). She pitched a complete game including four and one third hitless innings. She struck out seven batters and only walked one to pick up her first win of the season.

“Mattie, Mattie, Mattie, said coach Simkins was asked what the difference was in the second game. “She was spot on and threw a gem.”

In the bottom of the first, Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) singled and then scored on a Brown single to the gap. Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) then connected with one into the left center field gap scoring Brown giving DSC a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Coyotes rattled off three hits and picked up two runs to tie the game at 2-2.

Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) doubled into the left centerfield gap and with two outs Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) drew a walk. Enter Brown, on the first pitch she deposited into the right field corner scoring Hine and pinch runner Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School). An errant throw from the right field went in the dugout and allowed Brown to score and give DSC the 5-2 lead.

Simkins concluded, “Brown picked up a couple of timely hits and really got us rolling.”

Dixie State now will travel and play five games in the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas tomorrow-thru Sunday. Tomorrow's game Dixie State battles Western Washington at 8:00 pm Mountain. You can follow live stats of all the games via DixieAthletics.com.
