Red Storm Softball Win Twice at Desert Stinger Tournament

LAS VEGAS -- Dixie State softball picked up two wins on day two of the Las Vegas Desert Stinger Tournament.  The Red Storm defeated Central Washington 3-2 and Western Oregon 6-4.
 
After losing last night in the opening game of the tournament, the Red Storm rebounded with two gutty performances today.
 
Led by solid pitching performances, DSC (3-2) hurlers had 13 strikeouts and only one walk on the day.
 
Coach Randy Simkins said, “We as a staff were very pleased to see that our team bounced back with two wins today.  Mattie Snow (Tooele, UT/Tooele High School), Lauren Folta (Erda. UT/Tooele High School) and Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) all did a better job getting ahead of, and finishing off, hitters.”  
 
In the 3-2 win over Central Washington, senior pitcher was Snow went seven innings allowing four hits, one walk, and struck out four to improve to 2-0 on the season.
 
Kylee Higgins (Layton. UT/Layton High School) drew a two out walk and Marla Reite (Rolinda, CA/Central High School)r followed with a single of her own. DSC extended the inning when Kourtnie Schlacter (Mira Loma. CA/Jurupa Valley High School) struck out but reached on a wild pitch loading the bases.  Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) followed with a 2 RBI single to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead.
 
In the third inning Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) hit her first home run of the season a solo shot to left field giving DSC a 3-0 lead.
 
The Wildcats didn't go away easy, hitting solo shots in the sixth and seventh innings.
 
In the 6-4 win over Western Oregon, DSC turned to the senior Folta in the circle. She cruised through five innings allowing just one run. In the sixth the Wolves rattled off four straight hits including a two run home run to center to tie the game at four a piece.
 
The Red Storm scored their runs on a solo home run from Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) in the 2nd inning and a two run home run from Bufton in the third inning. It was their second home run of the season for players.
 
The Red Storm answered with more runs in the bottom half of the sixth, with Higgins hitting a solo home run to right center to break the tie and give DSC a 5-4 lead.
 
Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School) drew a two walk and Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) laid down a sac bunt moving her to second base. Bufton then picked up her sixth RBI of the day with a RBI double to left center, giving DSC the 6-4 lead.
 
With Folta getting chased in the sixth, Duncan came and pitched one and two thirds of one hit ball while striking out three WOU batters to improve to 1-1 on the season.
 
“Kelsey had a great day.  She went 4-5 with a double and HR. Played defensively very well at both 3B and 1B.  Bufton was clutch at the plate going 3-7 with 6 RBI,” said coach Simkins.
 
Dixie State concludes play in the tournament tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. matchup with host school Montana State Billings and a 3:00 p.m. game with Cal State San Bernardino at 3:00 pm.
