Red Storm Drop Desert Stinger Opener to Western Washington 9-6

LAS VEGAS -- The Dixie State College softball team lost their opening game of the Desert Stinger Tournament to Western Washington 9-6 in Las Vegas, NV.

Kelsey Mendenhall (Tooele. UT/Tooele High School) hit a three run homer in the first inning and Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) hit a two run homer in the fourth, but it wasnt enough to defeat the Vikings.

Mendenhall's home run in the first gave DSC the 3-0 lead.

Red Storm starting pitcher Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) cruised through the first two innings until two singles and a home run to right center tied the game 3-3 in the top half of the third frame.

Dixie capitalized in the bottom half of the inning on a Viking error. Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) singled up the middle scoring Bufton from second base giving DSC a 4-3 lead.

The wheels fell off the perverbial bus in the top of the fifth. Western Washington erupted for five runs on five hits, including a two run home run and a two run triple down the right field line. WWU lead 8-4 after three and a half innings.

In the fourth frame, Kourtnie Schlacter (Mira Loma. CA/Jurupa Valley High School) singled to right field and then Bufton hit a two run home run off the left center field scoreboard to bring the Red Storm within two runs and 8-6.

A DSC error allowed the final Western Washington run to score in the fifth inning.

In the win, Rachelle Berry picked up three hits and an RBI for WWU (1-6) who won their first game of the season.

For Dixie State four players collected two-hit games. Bufton, Cue, Mendenhall, and Schlacter.

Dixie State drops to 1-2 on the season. They continue play in the tournament tomorrow at 1:30 pm against Central Washington and 4:00 pm against Western Oregon.
