FRESNO, Calif. -- Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) gave the Dixie State women's basketball team the spark they needed by scoring 22 points off the bench to lead the Red Storm to an 87-64 win over Fresno Pacific today in Fresno, Calif.
Hayes finished 9 for 14 from the field and to tie for game-high marks in scoring. The Red Storm remain perfect 3-0 in PacWest play and 5-3 overall and run their winning streak to four games.
Coach Angie Kristensen said, "This was the best game Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) has played in a Dixie uniform and any time you can get a 20 plus win in conference we will take it. We still have yet to play a complete game."
The Red Storm led by only five points and intermission at 38-33.
"We got into foul trouble early which took us out of some things defensively but our bench did a great job of stepping up," continued Kristensen.
DSC needed a great second half performance from guard Jordan Giles (Rock Springs, WY/Rock Springs) who scored all 14 of her points in the second half. The Storm shot near 50 percent in the second half to separate themselves from the Sunbirds.
Fresno Pacific opened the second half on an 8-0 run and took the lead at 41-38 with 16:53 left. But the Red Storm responded with a 16-0 run of their own to build their largest lead of the game and never looked back.
Kristensen added, "Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) continues to dominate the game." Brown added her third consecutive game with a double double by grabbing 13 rebounds and adding 17 points in just 29 minutes on the floor.
Keairra White led FPU with 22 points, in which 12 of those came at the charity stripe.
Dixie State outrebounded FPU 52-33 and took advantage of the Sunbirds inside by outscoring them 54-36 in the paint.
"We keep getting better and when this team puts 40 minutes together they are going to be special," concluded Kristensen. "I am proud of them!"
The Red Storm return home for their final PacWest conference home game prior to the Christmas break when they host Point Loma on Saturday December 15 at 5:00 pm inside the Burns Arena.
