Red Storm Drop Final 2012 Game to Seattle Pacific

Miller scores 17 in loss

Box Score

SEATTLE -- In their final match-up of 2012, the Dixie State women's basketball team dropped a 76-66 non-conference game to Seattle Pacific on Monday afternoon in Seattle at the Broughman Pavillion.

Despite scoring 17 points for the third time this season, sophomore point guard Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day)'s effort wasn't enough to overcome the stingy defense of the Falcons.

The Storm took their final lead with 6:05 left in the first half when sophomore forward Rachael Spinks (St. George, UT/Pine View) nailed a mid range jumper to give DSC a 22-21 lead. SPU followed with a 16-1 run to take a 37-23 lead with just under three minutes left in the first half.

Dixie State ran off the final nine points of the half to get within 37-32 by halftime. The Red Storm came as close as three at 41-38 with 16:52 left in the game.

But SPU put the next seven points on the board, with a lay-in by Katie Benson, a mid-range jumper by Suzhanna Ohlsen, and a 3-pointer by Ohlsen. pushing it back to a 10-point margin at 48-38. The Storm never came closer than seven after that, and it was a double-digit Falcons advantage for the final 11 ½ minutes of the game, with the lead ballooning to 16 points twice.

A strong point for most of the season was the rebounding advantage they imposed on their opponents. It was a difference maker in today's contest as they were out rebounded 47-40 by SPU.

Dixie State shot near 45 percent in the first half and were held to just 28 percent in the second to finish the game at 35.9 percent. Stingy defense forced the Red Storm to many miscues, including the Falcons holding leading scorer and rebounder Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) to just eight point and eight rebounds.

Miller finished 4 of 16 from the field, Mandy Munns (Brigham City, UT/Box Elder) who was held to just eight points, connected on just 3 of 11 from the floor.

A bright spot for the Red Storm was the play off the bench of senior guard Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) who sparked the run in the first half with nine points. She finished with 13 points in 20 minutes of play.

Katie Benson and Suzanna Ohlsen each pumped in 21 points to lead SPU and Aubree Callen recorded her first career double-double as SPU pulled away in the second half.

The Red Storm who have lost three in a row, their second three game losing streak of the season, looks to rebound as they take their perfect 4-0 PacWest record to Cal Baptist on Saturday at 6 pm in Riverside.
