Box Score

SAINT GEORGE, UT - The Dixie State College volleyball team dropped a five set heartbreaker to Holy Names Unviersity 14-25, 25-27, 27-25, 25-15, 15-12 in PacWest Conference match on Saturday night in the Old Gym.

Dixie State looked to be cruising to an easy victory until a furocious rally in the third game by the Hawks sent the Red Storm squad on a downward spiral that they would never recover from. DSC led in the third set 22-13, only to see Holy Names rally back and steal the game at 27-25.

It was all the Hawks in the fourth set, building and early lead at 10-3 and kept that seperation to force the fifth and deciding game.

Dixie State jumpred out to an early 2-1 lead when Janessa Koelikker and Makenzi Bird (Saint George, UT/Snow Canyon ) blocked HNU's Katie Lopez. But, it would be the only lead the Red Storm could manage in the final frame and the Hawks cruised to a 15-12 win.

Outside hitter Rachel Vartanian had a match-high 23 kills and Lopez added 20 of her own for Holy Names. Dixie State just did not have an answer for either as they carried the Hawks to victory.

BIrd a trio of Red Storm players in double figures. She had 16 kills, Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul) added 14 and Pauline VonDinklage (American Samoa/Fagaitua) added 11 in the loss.

Coach Robyn Felder said, "It was disappointing to have a let down like we did after we played so well for two and half games. We just need to continue to work hard and learn from our mistakes."

The Red Storm drop to 6-9 overall and 4-6 in the PacWest, while Holy Names improves to 7-10 overall and 6-2 in the PWC.

Dixie State will conclude their homestand with a match next Saturday afternoon with Azusa Pacific at 3:00 pm in the Old Gym.
