VonDinklage and Bird Lead Red Storm to Victory Over Dominican

SAINT GEORGE -- The Dixie State volleyball team made light work of Dominican of California in a PacWest match as they cruised to a 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 victory in the Old Gym.

The Red Storm (6-8, 4-5 PWC) were led by the play of middle blocker Makenzi Bird (Saint George, UT/Snow Canyon ) and Paula VonDinklage. VonDinklage playing outside hitter in place of the battered Brita Jensen (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) led DSC with 11 kills and VonDinklage followed with 10 kills and added four block assists.

Jensen, who in injured her right wrist in the match at Point Loma Nazarene last week, played libero and didnt have a kill for only the second time this season. She played stellar on the back row and led the team with 15 digs and two assists.

Haylee Wilkes (Salt Lake City, UT/Brighton) who was planning to redshirt this season, played added to a solid defenisve night for the Red Storm with 8 digs of her own.

Coach Robyn Felder said, "I like how we played tonight, we came out agressive and were able to maintain that throughout the match."

The Red Storm team held Dominican to a 0.42 hitting percentage and just 33 kills on the night. The front line collected 11 team blocks, with Jen Hardman (American Fork, UT/American Fork), Kristin Heywood (Portland, OR/Sunset) and Bird leading the way.

Dixie State took an early lead in the first set and never looked back the rest of the match. They dominated both sides of the ball and cruised to the easy three set victory.

Dominican dropped to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in PacWest play. Jessica Jones led the Penguins with eight kills.

Dixie State is back in action Saturday night in the Old Gym at 6 pm when they host Holy Names University.
